German economic miracle Schröder's achievement
While many EU states are struggling with a recession, Germany has been riding on a wave of economic success for years. The economic journalist József Martin writes on the opinion portal Komment that Germany's economic growth is due to reforms carried out by former chancellor Gerhard Schröder: "Thanks to Schröder's reforms known as 'Agenda 2010', Germany laid the basis for economic success even before the crisis: the entire social system was restructured, the job market was made more flexible and the retirement age raised. Measures were introduced that no one even wanted to think about in many other countries of Europe. The number of jobless has dropped by two million since Schröder's reforms were introduced. Germany's economic success is no coincidence. ... Behind it is a deliberate, long-term, performance-oriented economic policy that has been pursued from one government to the next."
