No longer in keeping with the times

The daily comments on the efficacy of the peace mission concept that was born in the times of the Cold War: "Today this concept is outdated. ... The recent deployment of Blue Helmets to Dafur most clearly illustrates the problems plaguing peace troops today. ... Last year, the UN Security Council voted on a resolution ..., that foresees ... close cooperation between UN peace forces and the troops of the African Union (AU). ... Nearly a year after the resolution was passed ... the mixed peacekeeping force is still not ready and probably will not be ready for another year yet. ... Although in comparison to other UN missions this is an extremely large force ... there are still too few troops to protect the people in an area the size of France. ... This is a typical example of how the concept of peacekeeping forces as understood by the UN falls short of the actual requirements of regional crisis management today."
