Children too expensive for Slovenian government

The Slovenian government has announced rigorous austerity measures, planning among other things to make parents with more than one child attending daycares or kindergartens pay fees. After loud protests the government has partially backed down and is now willing to cover 70 percent of the costs for a second child and further siblings attending such facilities. The government is sending an extremely negative message to families and the young generation, writes the daily Večer: "No one in their right mind wants such an uncertain future for the young generation. Not even those who have no children. In the past it was clear that we must place our hopes in our youth, who for that reason had far more possibilities than they do today. But nowadays children and the young are seen as budget costs that must be kept in check. Even stranger is that the government doesn't care what sort of a generation it creates, or what a negative message its austerity measures are sending regarding cooperation and solidarity between generations."

Gut laws, bad judges

To mark the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the daily Večer urges Slovenian judges to apply the laws in force in the country. "It's encouraging that fewer and fewer women are afraid or ashamed to report cases of violence. ... But that makes it all the more difficult to understand why those very people who should take action against violence are looking away. I am referring to the social workers and judges who all too often do less to prevent domestic violence than the police. It's not enough that a year and a half ago Slovenia was one of the first countries in Europe to pass a law against domestic violence, as we're so fond of boasting. It's high time the law was applied. Other ministers should follow the example of Interior Minister Katarina Kresal and explain to their employees that there is zero tolerance for violence here, how victims are to be helped and what action is to be taken against perpetrators."
