A strong perfomance
In its leading article French daily Le Figaro describes the Pope's visit to France as a success: "A smile comes to one's face on reading the dramatic remarks with which Pope Benedict XVI was received in France last week: Does he have the right profile? Is he the one our society has been waiting for? ... He referred to laicism ... in the presence of the President of the Republic. He presented the intellectuals with a brilliant doctrine on history and theology. ... On Sunday he spent a lot of time addressing the bishops - in a brotherly manner but also with resoluteness. ... His argument is simple: ... Catholics must assume an active role, they must intervene 'promptly and in unison' ... This lecture on courage delivered by Benedict XVI was not only addressed to the members of the clergy ... but to all those who want to do good."

Cesare Battisti recounts his time on the run
"What message does it send to publish a book while one is on the run to avoid being convicted?" asks editorial writer Etienne de Montety on the occasion of the french release of the book 'Ma Cavale', by the writer Cesare Battisti. This former extreme-left activist who sought refuge in France, and who was found guilty accused of several murders by the Italian courts, vanished in August 2004 in order to avoid extradition to Italy. "While any accused (and even convicted) person is entitled to proclaim his innocence, why not do so within a judicial framework: in choosing the 'mediatic' road ..., Cesare Battisti disdainfully opts for 'rich man's' justice over that of European citizens. By seeing to it that his fate is played out in TV studios and the opinion columns of newspapers, he treats himself to a defense reserved for today's power brokers: those who have access to these means of communication and promotion."
