Media mogul in a tight spot
Despite closing down the tabloid News of the World owing to a phone-hacking scandal Rupert Murdoch has badly compromised his image, writes the liberal Tages-Anzeiger: "Murdoch's move won't win him ... many friends in the UK. The anger is growing rather than abating. Calls for resignations persist. Arrests, interrogations and painful inquiries are on the agenda. Even the doubts about Murdoch's character have increased. Prime Minister David Cameron, who would like to secure more influence for his benefactor, finds himself surrounded by hostile voters - and annoyed party liners. For the first time, politicians from all parties have dared to stand up to the much-feared tycoon in the House of Commons. This crisis has promoted a truly astounding new self-assurance - in the very city where Murdoch founded his global empire."

No alternative for Labour
The Frankfurter Rundschau newspaper sees no alternative to Gordon Brown: "The twelve months at the helm of the British government have proved a complete disaster for Brown and his Labour Party. ... But the party has little alternative. It can no longer replace Tony Blair's replacement. It will have to save itself from this predicament with Brown - or go under with him."

Northern Ireland, a model for peace
"For the first time, a generation is growing up that doesn't have to live under the shadow of terror in Northern Ireland," Peter Nonnenmacher writes. "Today, Northern Ireland presents itself as a community whose foundations are linked by an increasingly strong bond. There are still a couple of concerns. For example, how serious are Paisley and his supporters about their recent demand that the IRA dissolve itself completely? When will Northern Ireland finally be given control over its police force? And above all, the signs that Ireland's economic miracle and the "golden years" are drawing to an end are a source of concern in the UK. ... Perhaps the process will slow down, and setbacks are always a possibility. But no one here mourns the passing of a society that lived in hopeless self-destruction. Northern Ireland has moved on. The agreement has given its inhabitants a future. The peace can no longer be disrupted."

Devolved power has been returned to Northern Ireland
Peter Nonnenmacher lauds British Prime Minister Tony Blair for his contribution to the Norther Ireland peace process: "The Briton generated the dynamic that advanced the process – with unsurpassed engagement, sharp focus, a keen analytical eye and tactical deftness. Northern Ireland has become Blair's greatest success. And it prompts the question, accompanied by an inevitable sense of regret, as to what the Blair era might have been had the Labour Prime Minister stood up for peace in other areas as well, rather than letting himself be dragged into a military adventure."
