On the death of Alain Robbe-Grillet
French writer Alain Robbe-Grillet, founder of the nouveau roman, is dead. Jürgen Ritte praises his wide-ranging talents: "He fundamentally changed the notion of what a novel is, what a film is. He expressed this again perfectly, just before his 80th birthday, in his novel 'La Reprise' (2001), whose directly translated title - 'The Repetition'- barely does it justice. He meant rather resumption, improvement, repair, returning (as if to a boxing ring). One can read the novel under any one of these titles. Each provides another theme, another meaning. And in the multiplicity of interpretations there is not only an iridescent sensory play of literature, but also the unfathomable figure of a modern author for whom fiction is all."

Revolutionary France
"One can only draw the sad conclusion that in barely 18 months France has chalked up an impressive number of failures," writes Jürgen Ritte. "Most French are aware that the country (and to an even greater extent its government) are in the midst of a crisis. Seldom has there been such a flood of 'political pamphlets' as over the past weeks and months. One pamphlet is particularly interesting. It was written by the Parisian economic historian Jacques Marseille... The opening words of this historian - who also listens to what the nation has to say - are as captivating as the title of his book, which promises to teach people 'how to handle the civil war in France.' 'Ca va péter!', 'there's going to be a battle.' This phrase, which sums up popular political analysis in France, is the subject of his exegesis. Says Marseille, France does not know the word 'consensus'. The country's historical development has long been governed by the logic of civil war – of fracture."
