An unexpected success for the Montreux jazz festival

After four years in deficit, the music festival 'Montreux Jazz', which drew to an end on Saturday July 21st, has found a budgetary balance, with 57,000 tickets sold. Arnaud Robert recalls that "It was a wild bet against the odds. To save three million euros (on a budget of 16), by reducing rather than patching up the project. ... While the number of summer events is growing exponentially and artists' fees are frequently doubled, the Montreux challenge appeared to be a losing battle. However, the festival's foundation committee, along with secretary general Mathieu Jaton convinced the boss to focus on its assets: exceptional acoustics; evenings of entertainment envied across the five continents and, above all, a jealously guarded address book."

Eastern Europe in the spotlight at Paleo Festival

As the Paleo World Music Festival gets underway, Arnaud Robert takes a look at the Romanian group Taraf de Haïdouks ('orchestra of viceless bandits'), which kicks off this edition devoted to Eastern Europe. "This is Taraf as it is meant to be. The Rolling Stones of Roma marriage, a recurrent theme in World music social gatherings. ... The music of funerals, christenings, engagements ... Bandits of the universal - like all Roma, with a dash of class added to the mix. We are not talking about World music, nor sono mondiale, and even less about some pretentious ethno-music fest. Discovering this musical ensemble is to recognise the influences from this nomadic East that we have made our own. India, Spain, the Arab world, klezmer. The Roma are the creoles of our continent. Capable in a single generation of assimilating another culture. Clearly, thieves. But thieves who return the plunder - and then some."

Gotan Project's tango roots

The daily writes about the successful run of the Franco-Argentinian group, Gotan Project, following the release of their second album, 'Lunatico'. "Let's be blunt about it, Gotan Project has been irritating people for quite a while. In 2001, by dint of being subjected to their last-dance-of-the-night tango - a slightly altered Argentinian electronic beat -over and over again on the open radio waves, you had to be a truly diehard fan to remain devoted," writes Arnaud Robert. He believes 'Lunatico' has taken on a more ambitious mission than the previous album. "The backbone of Argentinian identity has been grafted onto a country that sought to rid itself of its blackness. The tango, however, despite its refining, still bears the seeds of its African past. ... Gotan Project is Africanising its imprint, inviting singers with a distant charm (Cristina Vilallonga), less predictable variables."
