Smart Romanians swindling EU
The EU Commission on Wednesday halted a payout of 850 million euros for around 120 projects in Romania and now plans to begin investigating charges of corruption against several Romanian mayors. Silviu Sergiu writes in the daily Evenimentul Zilei that the allegations of corruption are just the tip of the iceberg: "I'm sure that more swindles involving local politicians from various parties will surface. Because it's difficult to believe that a local ruler would be able to resist the temptation of sticking his fat fingers into the European honey pot. The world that has access to Europe's honey pots is not divided into angels and devils but the 'smart guys' and the 'very smart guys'. ... The European Union won't hesitate to take back any embezzled money from these local rulers. Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy would be risking their chances of winning the next elections if they didn't. After the precedent set by Greece, their voters will immediately exact revenge for any concession made to those countries with a high level of corruption."

Romania wants to facilitate access to dual passports for Moldovans
According to the Romanian authorities up to a million Moldovans have applied for a Romanian dual citizenship passports which would enable them to live in the EU. Now Romania wants to facilitate the procedure but in all probability without giving unrestricted access, the daily Evenimentul Zilei writes: "Certainly the authorities in Bucharest won't be granting Romanian citizenship in bulk, for such a strategy would meet with opposition from other EU states who in view of the economic crisis don't want to see the labour market flooded with ex-Moldovans. … The danger is also that no one remains in Chişinău to resist the communists' unlawful assumption of authority. The immediate consequence could be the strengthening of the authoritarian regime and the consolidation of Russia's position. Yet Romanian citizenship offers Romanians [in the Republic of Moldova] the prospect of economic prosperity within the EU. This, too, is an effective weapon in the battle against communism."

The advantages of the economic crisis
The economic crisis may also have a good side, writes the daily Evenimentul Zilei: "Perhaps there will be those who decide against buying a third car or decide to live with their wives in a normal apartment. ... Perhaps there will be nothing left to steal in the West and those who made money in Spain by burgling and other little dirty deals will return. This would improve Romania's image in the West because there would be only industrious and clever Romanians living abroad. ... [Romanian] politicians could be forced to take action against the crisis, even if it costs them votes. They would finally have to deal with the really relevant issues in society. Perhaps this crisis will mean a return to normality in Romania. Or perhaps not."
