Joschka Fischer's retirement from politics
Journalist Eusebio Val describes Joschka Fischer as the "undeniable spearhead in the birth of ecopacifism in Europe. The onetime taxi driver, globe-trotter, and autodidact who was never able to go to university is now off to become a professor in the United States. His departure from politics signals the end of an era in the Bundestag. Fischer was one of the best orators of the past 20 years." As foreign minister and deputy chancellor, "Fischer was a paragon of moderation and diplomacy. ... The initial radicalism of his Green commitment turned into a pragmatism that enabled him to become the voice of the 'realists'. ... The broad German coalition deprived him of a place in power last Autumn, even if he asserts that he would have left in any case. It is highly unlikely that the American adventure will be the last one for such an exceptional individual."
