Benazir Bhutto's assassination

Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto was assasinated on Thursday, December 27th. Richard Whelan of the think tank IISS (International Institute for Strategic Studies) examines the repercussions this may have on the west. "Many al-Qaeda attacks in Britain were directed from Pakistan. Al-Qaeda has several camps there for training British citizens of Pakistani origin for terrorist activities. Although these attacks have not been particularly successful to date, they display the continued relevance and resilience of al-Qaeda and show its desire and ability to attack the West. .. in Pakistan itself, there has been a steady penetration of extremist religious thinking and a growing number of terrorist attacks over the last three years, ... the assassination of Bhutto unfortunately makes huge sense. Of the three serious candidates for power in Pakistan today, Bhutto was the only one to present a strong secular alternative."

Irish support for Turkish EU accession

"Turkey needs help from an honest broker such as Ireland if it is to get a fair accession hearing from the EU," argues Richard Whelan, international expert on the threat of islamic terrorism. "Turkey's application to join the EU may not be derailed, but it is faring badly and needs help of the kind that a diplomatic intervention by an independent and respected EU member can provide. ... Ireland on the other edge of the EU, having gone through serious difficulties in gaining EU accession, should take up the challenge of championing Turkish EU accession. ... On January 1st, Germany takes up the EU presidency. Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, has long opposed Turkish EU membership, preferring a form of privileged association. Without a major diplomatic push by Dermot Ahern [Irish minister for Foreign Affairs], Turkey's position will slowly but surely erode. Turkey is genuine in its western orientation, believing in a convergence not a clash of civilisation."
