Modern architecture up against national heritage
Interviewed by Anatxu Zabalbeascoa, Italian architect Cino Zucchi explains how difficult it is to develop projects in towns which already have a rich cultural background. "In general Europe has some of most dense towns in the world. Urban tissue is made-up of strata, of historical layers. ... There is not a single square centimetre of virgin territory without a past to be found in European towns. Modern architecture is breaking away from town centres because it is inspired more by the object than by the location. It can be very spectacular and developed everywhere, but it is not anchored. Over the last twenty years, Spain and Italy have developed a culture of territory modification. This is linked to the acceptation of the fact that we are neither the first nor the last."

Ever-taller skyscrapers
Anatxu Zabalbeascoa reacts to the project dreamt-up by two Spanish architects for the Chinese city of Shanghai: a 1,228 metre high tower, 'The Bionic Tower'. "[After September 11th 2001], the world had a few doubts about the future of skyscrapers. Was there any sense in building ever-higher towers? ... But that only lasted a while and skyscrapers continued to proliferate around the world. ... Records for height are lasting less and less. However, at this pace, other questions are being raised: up until which point is this technically feasible? How long can this last? ... The bionic tower is a utopian project. At best it will serve as a lighthouse to light-up the future, at worst it will be put away in a cabinet of curiosities."
