Feridun Zaimoglu's support for neo-Muslims

In the run-up to the Islam Conference scheduled to take place next week in Berlin, the question of who should represent Islam in Germany has triggered a fierce debate. Turkish-born writer Feridun Zaimoglu wants to give up his place at the conference to a "young, self-assured neo-Muslim female who is a second or third-generation immigrant and who self-confidently professes her belief in the Muslim faith. In an interview with Anna Reimann, he explains why. "I'm not a secular Muslim and nor am I an orthodox one. I'm an author. I would like to take part, but I believe it makes more sense if a young woman takes my place at the Islam Conference... I have ... criticised the fact that in their critiques the "female critics of Islam' always blame Islam for all the problems. In my opinion this is an incomprehensible, rather clumsy view of the world... Let there be an end to all the recriminations. People shouldn't act as if the Islam debate were an apocalyptic battle between good and evil, the goal of which is to destroy the bad orthodoxies because they stand for 'non-integration'."

Indignation over the cancellation of "Idomeneo" in Berlin

In light of the wave of indignation caused by the cancellation of the Mozart opera "Idomeneo", German-Turkish writer Feridun Zaimoglu calls on people to "keep things in perspective". "It's as if half of Germany had just been waiting for the opportunity to pounce on someone. Ms. Harms made a carefully weighed decision which I very much respect... Nowadays, it seems, one day we're offending the Christians and the next it's the Muslims. However I also want to make one thing very clear: there can and should be no external censorship. But it's also unacceptable that a director who was acting to protect the safety of her audience and actors be accused of self-censorship... On the one hand I see the usual suspects, those who are constantly on the look-out for any excuse to act offended. On the other I see the narrow-minded critics who have it very easy and are now condemning the cancellation as an act of submission to the Islamists. That's absolute nonsense."

Feridun Zaimoglu on immigrants in Germany

"We can indeed be proud of the situation in Germany. Ostensibly multicultural model countries like Holland and France have broken down,” writes Turkish-born author Feridun Zaimoglu on the subject of "his Germany”. "In the next decade, a German brand of Islam will develop – a lay movement of Muslims who were born and grew up in Germany. They will be in a better position to deal with the fears of residents who feel insecure about living in the direct proximity of a mosque. When Muslims are committed to upholding the principles of law and freedom, they have a legitimate cause: that of making their beliefs visible. They have had to keep their beliefs concealed for too long now... The process of unification has not yet been completed. Perhaps the West Germans, East Germans and foreign Germans of today are the forebears of the unique nation that we will be in 30 years time. Then, those things that belong together will grow together.”
