The low birth rate
Owing to its low birth rate, Slovenia will never be "a member of the club of highly developed European nations", writes Igor Zalar of the Volksbank, in a commentary on the EU's most recent demographic study. "If we want this to change, we must make immediate changes in our demographic policy. We must create an environment in which children are seen as a positive social factor... The second alternative would be a new migration policy aimed at attracting young, qualified workers to the country and giving them fully legal employment to ensure that they pay all social security contributions. I think we need more immigrants just because Slovenian society is aging so rapidly. However, this strategy must be complemented by other measures. Otherwise, by the year 2030 we will no longer be able to call this country our own."
