Evenimentul Zilei
Founded by the businessman Mihai Carciog and the two journalists Ion Cristoiu und Cornel Nistorescu, Evenimentul Zilei ("event of the day) became Romania's first tabloid in 1993, featuring plenty of gossip and political scandals. Its circulation quickly rose to more than 600,000 copies. The content and circulation underwent drastic transformations in the following years. The founders withdrew and a serious newspaper with a rapidly dwindling circulation emerged. In 1998 the German publisher Gruner Jahr took over the newspaper and then in 2003 the Swiss publisher Ringier took control. In 2010 it was sold to the Romanian media entrepreneur and film director Bobby Paunescu owing to a sharp drop in turnover.
