Le Monde
The first copy of the daily Le Monde, published in 1944, consisted of a single page printed on both sides. Charles de Gaulle wanted a big newspaper focused on external affairs, and therefore strongly backed Le Monde. Today it is considered the most influential newspaper in France. Owing to heavy losses the paper was sold to private investors in 2010. Up to that point journalists and employees had always held the majority stake. In June 2010 the employee shareholders decided to sell the stock to culture patron Pierre Bergé and his partners, the banker Mathieu Pigasse and Internet entrepreneur Xavier Niel. The newspaper continues to struggle financially and has debts of over 100 million euros.
