Irish Independent
The paper was founded in 1905 by the Irish businessman and nationalist William Martin Murphy as the direct successor of the Daily Irish Independent. In 1919, during the Irish War of Independence, members of the terrorist organisation the IRA destroyed the printing facilities of the Independent in reaction to its constant and harsh criticism of the IRA. Until its takeover by Tony O'Reilly, president of the American food company Heinz, the Independent was considered a nationalist-Catholic paper but under O'Reilly's management it has become libertarian and populist.
