La Repubblica
Founded by Eugenio Scalfari and Carlo Caracciolo in 1976, this daily was initially close to the extraparliamentary Left but then became left-liberal, in line with the reformist wing of the centre-left parties. It has become an alternative to Italy's leading daily, the liberal conservative Corriere della Sera, with which it competes for the highest circulation. Since 2008 it has launched several harsh attacks against Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, including the famous "ten unanswered questions" in the Noemi Letizia sex scandal.
