The Independent

This daily newspaper, launched by a group of editors in 1986, has managed to establish itself as the UK's fourth-largest quality newspaper. However in recent years it has run a huge deficit that left it fighting for survival. It was taken over by Russian oligarch Alexander Lebedev in March 2010. In the meantime its situation has stabilised and rumours of its imminent closure have become seldom.
