Corriere del Ticino

Independent daily for Italian-speaking Switzerland, founded in Lugano in 1891. Initially an organ of the conservative Unione democratica ticinese party, Corriere became an independent newspaper at the beginning of the 20th century. It nonetheless had close ties to right-wing liberalism and showed sympathy with the fascist regime in Italy. A trademark of the newspaper was its numerous contributions from writers from Ticino and Italy. It was the first Ticino newspaper to introduce a sports supplement. Since 1941 the newspaper has been managed by a governing board. Its circulation has gone down slightly from 39,000 copies in 2006 to 37,000.
