Lidové noviny
The Lidové noviny ("The People's Paper") was founded in Brno in 1893 and is the oldest Czech newspaper. It survived the National Socialist protectorate with pro-German editors. After the communists took power in 1948 the legendary chief editor Ferdinand Pertoutka was replaced by a communist. Closed down in 1952, it was re-launched in 1988, initially underground and with a foreword by Václav Havel, who later became the country's president. Since 1999 it has been published legally. The paper is a conservative shaper of opinion. It is owned by the Rheinisch-Bergische Verlagsgesellschaft company in Germany.
