Élet és Irodalom

Élet és Irodalom (abbreviated to ÉS) was founded on 15 March 1957 as a literary magazine. In the mid-1960s ÉS expanded its range of topics and successfully combined literature and themes from public life. In the 1980s the newspaper's paid circulation peaked at 120,000. After the fall of communism the paper ran into financial difficulties owing to its sinking circulation. Consolidation followed in the mid 1990s. Today the paper is considered not only a literary medium that publishes the most renowned Hungarian authors and poets but also as an important intellectual forum for public discourse.
