La Stampa
The paper was founded in 1867 under the name Gazzetta Piemontese by journalist and writer Ruggero Bonghi. The newspaper's motto was "Frangar non flectar" ("we want to fight, not submit"). After La Stampa criticised the Mussolini regime in 1924 following the murder of the secretary general of the Socialist Unity Party (PSU), Giacomo Matteotti, the paper passed into the ownership of the Agnelli family, the founders of car giant Fiat who were loyal to the regime, as a means of keeping it under control. The paper continues to be owned by the Fiat family today.
