Wiener Zeitung

The Wiener Zeitung has always been state-run: it began as the Wiennerisches Diarium in 1703. Since 1857 the paper, which had in the meantime been renamed Wiener Zeitung, has been published by the Austrian government. The Wiener Zeitung is reputed to be the world's oldest newspaper still in existence. Since 2004, when Andreas Unterberg, who had been removed from his post as editor of the daily Die Presse, took charge of the Wiener Zeitung the daily has been continually modernised. Reinhard Göweil, the new editor-in-chief appointed at the end of 2009, has announced that the paper will become a "liberal quality newspaper".
