Estonia needs more Russians in power
Ever since Estonia gained independence 20 years ago there has been a discussion about how to better integrate the country's Russian population. Estonia needs more Russians in the public sector, the liberal daily Eesti Päevaleht argues: "The Russians play a prominent role in Estonia's private sector but their presence in the public sector is negligible. How can the Russians be persuaded to see Estonia as their home country? Perhaps if we facilitate their access to power. If they see that they can become for example ministers in the Republic of Estonia, and that this is their state too. This requires the following action: firstly the Russians' demands for access to the Estonian-led administration should be made a top priority. Secondly, any future Russian minister should refrain from claiming in the first interview that Estonia voluntarily joined the Soviet Union."
