Lluís Bassets on Europe's wolves

The Europeans could cause their common project to fail with their self-destructive behaviour, journalist Lluís Bassets warns in his blog Del Afiler al Elefante: "The European is a wolf for the European. This crisis is destroying the little solidarity that remained among Europeans. It is the prelude to the collapse of the project and the fruit of a suicidal attitude. No matter how many times they tell us that we're all in the same boat and that if that boat sinks, everyone goes down with it, everyone is still trying to save their own skin and they are at each other's throats in the process. The captain was to blame for the Costa Concordia running aground, but the European ship will sink if it continues like this because its captains are fighting each other instead of agreeing on a firm and clear course. … In recent days we have seen two new examples of the lack of solidarity that is causing Europe's leaders to act like wolves towards each other. Sarkozy didn't hesitate to use the problems in Spain to dress up his own miserable presidential performance. … Mario Monti is attacking Spain for fear of being overtaken if the yields on Italian bonds rise higher than those on Spanish bonds again. ... And not just Sarkozy and Monti are doing this. Angela Merkel's Germany - the biggest wolf of all the European wolves - has been acting like this since the very beginning of the crisis."
