The West's lack of solidarity with Georgia
Russia has accused Georgia of state terrorism and imposed sanctions on the Caucasian state. Ceslovas Iskauskas sees this as a first step towards a bitter conflict and calls on Europe to show solidarity with Georgia. "Georgia's president Mikhail Saakasshvili is making every effort to import Western standards to Georgia and deserves praise for doing so. He is very committed to promoting his small country abroad, despite the bitter attacks of separatists backed by Moscow. As far as Putin is concerned, if Kosovo is allowed to be independent of Serbia, Abkhazia and Southern Ossetia have the same right. However, the Western press often portrays Georgia as a problem because it insists on rousing Russia's ire. Does this mean the Lithuanian, Polish and Ukrainian leaders were wrong to receive Saakashvili in their countries?"
