Whaling in Iceland

While whaling opponents stress that the activity leads to the extinction of many types of whales and heavy losses for the tourist industry, the majority of Iceland's inhabitants see no harm in their whaling tradition. Niklas Ekdals points out that Sweden should assume a mediating role in this conflict. "Because we urgently need a mediator now that the subject of 'whaling' has grown out of all proportion. Hundreds of Icelanders applauded last weekend as a dead whale was towed into the harbour... The question is: do they want to earn big money with whale-watching or a pittance for whale meat which only a few people really want to eat? It must be possible to reach a compromise. And before Sweden starts threatening with sanctions it should take a look in the mirror. Here we have a similar ideological conflict with wolf-hunting."
