The EU's progress report on Turkey
Doris Kraus calls for an end to the "shameful delaying tactics regarding Turkey". "Public opinion within the EU is already against Turkey's membership, and even the Turks are growing increasingly sceptical. It would be more honest to negotiate a special relationship with Turkey instead of investing time and money in decade-long negotiations for something that only a fraction of those involved really want to see happen... The old warning that the West could lose Turkey as an ally is not very convincing. Who can say that ten years of nerve-racking negotiations that are potentially humiliating for the Turks won't have the same effect? The problem is that no one has the courage to tell Turkey this. They prefer to continue with the delaying tactics in the hope that the Turks will get tired of the whole thing and give up."
