The Portuguese still need to grow
The chronicler Ferreira Fernandes invites the Portuguese to show some modesty within Europe. "With the lowest GDP and salaries in Europe, the Portuguese are stuck with their reality: they are also the shortest Europeans on the continent. The Average European is 1.69 metres tall, the average Portuguese is 1.65 metres tall ... What this statistic shows is that we are lagging behind economically and are far from catching up. One of our country's tragedies is the belief that we are important although we are really so little. ... In the end the measuring tape is confirming that we are modest. I like that idea: We are half way there and we have to understand that we still need to grow."
