The governing PIS loses run-off elections for post of mayor
Poland's ruling conservative Law and Justice Party (PiS) has lost the runoff votes in mayoral elections in several Polish cities, including Warsaw and Krakow. The former Prime Minister and acting Mayor of Warsaw, Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz, lost to Hanna Gronkiewicz-Waltz of the liberal Civic Platform party (PO). The newspaper's editor-in-chief Pawel Lisicki comments. "The results have shown that even Marcinkiewicz's personal popularity was not enough to overcome the people's disapproval of the PiS's style of government... It will be a great shame if these elections intensify the conflict between the Civic Platform (PO) and the PiS at all levels, because whether and how soon we can start using EU funding depends on cooperation between the two parties at both a local and central level."
