A new giant on the European energy market
"If there is a lesson to be learnt from the merge that is taking place between the Spanish Iberdrola and the British Scottish Power, it is that the history of the energy sector's consolidation in Europe still largely remains to be written", explains Pascal Aubert in an editorial. "If, as top experts are predicting, future liberalisation of European energy markets is to see the emergence within the next ten years of two or three very big actors of continental and international proportions, it is not easy to tell which names these behemoths will carry. A few weeks ago Iberdrola-Scottish Power did not feature in any combination. ... We can see quite well how the opportunistic combination of two medium weights - that nobody imagined would one day be seen in the heavy weight ring - can shake up the sector's hierarchy. This game of skittles should provide all competitive energy producers with food for thought."
