LUKoil's global expansion
The Russian oil concern LUKoil is taking over the petrol stations owned in Europe by the US concern ConocoPhillips, including chains like Jet in Finland. According to commentator Björn Sundell, Finland's petrol sector is undergoing rapid changes – as are those of other countries. What is the Russian company's real goal? "It's difficult to tell what LUKoil's ambitions are, because the company isn't exactly known for its transparency. Within a very short time it has built up distribution networks in very different countries and acquired over 2,000 petrol stations in the US. LUKoil has also increased its presence in Turkey and Eastern Europe, from Romania to Ukraine, and in Finland it's number three in the sector. The company has its own oil wells so money isn't a problem when it comes to international expansion. And it's interested in everything – from Chinese petrol stations to European refineries."
