Italy and the struggle against global warming
The editorialist Giovanni Valentini considers the action plan for the reduction of greenhouse gases decided upon by the EU on January 10th and deplores the fact that Italy, this laid-back country, does not feel sufficiently concerned. "While we are trying to get back to the financial criteria of Maastricht, we are very far from the environmental parameters of Brussels. The fact is that the two questions over-lap, because both concern our economic and social mode of development. On one hand, the lack of rigorous control over public accounts and, on the other, the lack of autonomy and discipline in energy consummation in a country that refuses austerity, neglects its natural national heritage and destroys its environment for today and future generations."
