Anti-Semitic press in Hungary
Writer Péter Esterházy is shocked by an openly anti-Semitic article by the well-known writer Tibor Gyurkovics. The essay appeared in the January 6 edition of the "Magyar Nemzet," Hungary's second largest daily paper. In it, Gyurkovics suggests that Hungarian Jews had no identity, and questions their contribution to progress in the country. Writes Esterházy: "Since last autumn's demonstrations, the right-wing, particularly its visible, aggressive segment, has been using very basic language consisting of either yes or no: We are good, the others are evil, everything in the world is in black and white... Ten or 15 years ago, I would have let loose if I saw something like that in the paper. I would not have believed my eyes, and I would have screamed out in hopes of - in hopes of whatever. Today, this tone seems acceptable because none of the conservatives have openly protested his article."
