Change in the European Parliament
Radek Honzek describes the new Parliamentary President, the conservative Hans-Gert Pöttering: "There are great expectations of him, but one should not await a revolution. Pöttering's career is based on the principle of political compromise; he considers it one of his greatest successes that he has not made a single political enemy since he first was elected as a EU legislator in 1979. He has stated that his priorities are a harmonisation between the EU and its parliament on one hand, and with the citizens on the other. He also stresses the importance of improving relations between Europe and the Islamic world. He faces the biggest test first. This is the year in which a decision will be made about whether to bring the dormant EU Constitution back to life. The new president must decide whether the Parliament will have a greater role to play in this decision.”
