How can Europe achieve energy independence?
Stig Nygard asks how the EU can become less dependent on Russia for energy provision. "Atomic power is definitely not a long-term solution; at most, it is a stop-gap measure. But geopolitical realities are constantly shifting. One of today's great hopes is in Norway. The discovery of natural gas in the Barents Sea could provide Europe with huge quantities of natural gas and thereby reduce dependency on Russia. Norway is a more trustworthy partner which already accounts for 25 percent of the gas supply to France, Germany and England. In 2011, that should be up to 135 billion cubic metres, almost 50 percent more than today. In the short term, however, the EU is having a hard time becoming less dependent on Russia. Much higher investments in renewable energy sources are needed urgently, as well as an agreement on a common strategy."
