Romania's foreign minister resigns
Following the arrest of two Romanian workers who illegally filmed events at a US military base in Iraq, Romanian Foreign Minister Mihai-Razvan Ungureanu handed in his resignation on Friday. Ungureanu had informed the president of Romania, Traian Basescu, of the incident, but not the prime minister, Calin Tariceanu. Bogdan Chirieac comments: "It would have been no problem if the foreign minister had been voted out of office in one of the upcoming elections. But as things stand now, Brussels will not see Ungureanu, but foreign policy, as the victim of the current discord in Romania. Europe's top politicians won't know whom to call when they want to contact Bucharest. Should they call the president, who is facing proceedings instigated by the government for his removal from office, or the prime minister, who is accused of lying and abusing the law, or the foreign minister, who has been hunted out of office? If Romania doesn't know, then how is Brussels supposed to know?"
