Romanians dicover the Bulgarian coast

For tourists, Bulgaria's Black Sea coast is cheaper than Romania's. This is why many young Romanians are planning a short trip to their neighbouring country this year, Marius Nitu reports, adding: "There's a simple explanation for the difference between the respective development of the Bulgarian and Romanian tourist industries. Our tourism is stagnating at a low level of development. The Bulgarians, on the other hand, have a nationwide strategy owing to the fact that German investors have bought up entire seaside resorts there. Here in Romania, we're still stuck in the Middle Ages. Our coast is full of Romanian nouveau riches who each own a hotel, a restaurant or a kiosk. This fragmentation is the result of partial privatisation, a legacy of the former social democratic minister of tourism... Romanian tourism is likely to lag behind Bulgarian tourism for years to come."
