Is the G8 summit still worthwhile?

Jürg Dedial has little sympathy with notorious do-gooders and questions the purpose of major events such as the G8 summit. "As inviolable as the right to hold a G8 summit in Germany undoubtedly is, a serious discussion about the purpose or lack of purpose of such a meeting is still warranted. What will take place between Wednesday and Friday in Heiligendamm seems in no way commensurate with all the expense and trouble it has cost. Too much of it is just a media circus (for instance the topic of Africa), and too little is contributed toward a solution to the really serious problems of this world. Certain participants have lost virtually all ability to act, while others already have made clear which topics they are not willing to discuss. And yet another participant sees himself in the role of the notorious troublemaker. Meanwhile, truly powerful nations such as China, India and Brazil are not included. There seems to be a little too much hypocrisy on both sides of the fence."
