Cold energy war between Romania and Russia
Last weekend an energy summit between the countries of south-eastern Europe and Russia took place in Zagreb. Romanian head of state Traian Basescu warned Russian President Vladimir Putin not to use the energy market as a political weapon. According to Bogdan Chirieac, a cold war has broken out between the two countries. "Romania could end up footing the bill. At the moment, the war between Basescu and Putin is costing Romanians around 250 million dollars per year. Russia has negotiated different gas prices with each of the three South East European countries - Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia. The price for Bulgaria and Serbia is lower than that for Romania... Moreover, the government still hasn't come up with a solid energy strategy. Yet Romania is the only country in Eastern Europe to have its own decent oil and gas reserves at its disposition."
