Criticisms of Sarkozy's economic policies
The French president provokes several concerns in Europe, says Sylvain Besson. "In front of the Union's finance ministers, Nicolas Sarkozy will resort to his 'shock' argument: he was elected to keep his promises, notably to 'give 68 million Euros back to the French people'. But this may not dispel the European financial chiefs' scepticism. They wonder how France can lower taxes and raise public spending, like research, at the same time as reducing its debt and deficit. In addition, they would like to know which structural reforms Nicolas Sarkozy has in mind to increase the French economy's performance over the long term. This many questions promise to make the meeting in Brussels a lively affair."
