Should bullfighting be banned?
"Leaping into the arena of current affairs, the heated polemic around bullfighting is raging through this summer", notes the editorialist Yves Thréard. "Several sensitive souls in the celebrity columns ... are calling for the death of bullfighting in France. They have been refused the broadcasting of an abolitionist advertisement, but they are brandishing their own banderillas, press releases and interviews. ... Bullfighting is a majestic tradition, heightened by the talent of its actors. It is a cultural practice anchored in a few regions of the planet. ... Those who want to see it disappear are, strangely enough, often the same who are concerned about the standardisation of the world, who struggle to preserve identities. Their crusade is as ridiculous as the violence of their discourse. Let us hope that the European Union does not one day bring a fatal toreador's blow to bullfighting ."
