Sarkozy's difficult social reforms
"Nicolas Sarkozy is not Margaret Thatcher. This was confirmed again on Tuesday, September 18th in the speech the French president delivered on social reforms that he envisages for the coming months. Where the 'Iron Lady' liked to forcefully and stringently impose, he prefers to dialogue ... Does this softer method have a chance in succeeding?", wonders Sylvain Besson. "[This method] has yet to define what concrete advantages employees of the public services concerned - mainly the national electricity board and train service - will receive in exchange for giving up their sacred 'social entitlements'. From this point of view, the French president still has a lot of explaining to do for his reforms to unfold as he wishes, gently."
