Bishops criticise EU anti-homophobia resolution

The journalist and writer Marco Politi considers remarks by Cardinal Camillo Ruini, the president of the Conference of Italian Bishops, criticising a European parliamentary resolution. The text condemns discrimination toward homosexuals and deplores the fact that in some countries, homosexual couples do not have the same rights as married couples. "The Vatican's positions on homosexuals are very isolated in Europe. With elections coming up, the cardinal Ruini felt it necessary to remind the voters of some binding principlesand and send a clear message to the politicians... Fortunately for the bishops, a large majority of the European parliament's Italian deputies voted against the European resolution. While the catholic Germans, undoubtedly in order to set an example, voted massively in favour."
