Veltroni, the great hope for Italian politics
According to Björn Mansson, Walter Veltroni has good chances of becoming Italian prime minister. "The new Democratic Party lived up to its name when on Sunday over three million voters went to the ballot to elect a leader and representatives for the party. ... The new party wants to consolidate centre-left forces and act as a counterweight to Silvio Berlusconi's 'Forza Italia' and the National Alliance. Consolidation is precisely what Berlusconi's opponents need, and Italy's entire party landscape would benefit from it. ... If Prodi resigns and Veltroni manages to keep the fragile coalition with its slim majority together, he could even become prime minister before 2011."
