Sluggish cooperation between the Nordic states
The Nordic Council is holding its annual meeting in Oslo form October 31st to November 1st. According to Björn Mansson, the delegates of the five member states (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden) will do a lot of talking but there won't be much action. "The North boasts about being world leader in many areas, from social benefits to environmental policy, innovation, freedom of opinion and foreign aid. Yet the reality doesn't always measure up to these noble ideals. Economic reality is catching up with the social systems, the Baltic is a sad example of misguided environmental policies, Denmark's immigration policy is among the most restrictive in Europe and Finland is stingy with its foreign aid. The list of shortcomings goes on. Pretty words about cooperation between the Nordic states will be said at the meeting but all too often the reality of the situation is different."
