Islamist terrorism condemned in Madrid
Leo Wieland welcomes the court ruling in Madrid: "Spain is the first Western nation to bring a major trial against Islamist terrorism to a successful conclusion in accordance with the law. Spain's judiciary has achieved what the United States failed to do after September 11 and the United Kingdom after [July 7th 2005] : return verdicts of guilty based on a solid body of evidence against a group of fanatics mostly of Moroccan provenance and their accomplices. ... Despite all the conspiracy theories, the Basque terrorist organisation ETA had nothing to do with the attacks, but it does have ties with al-Qaeda. ETA uses the latter as a source of inspiration for its threats of attacks against Spain and its fantasies of 'reconquering' Al Andalus. The war in Iraq also crystallised its plans and served as an excuse for its killings. Three days after the attacks, Manuel Aznar's conservative government suffered an election defeat. This remains the terrorists' greatest achievement."
