Can Belgium finally end its crisis?
For Ferreira Fernandes, Belgium is showing how national governments are not indispensable in the EU. "Belgium is the bureaucratic capital of Europe. The directives from all 27 EU member states come from Brussels. But there is no government in Brussels these days, even to receive directives itself. Wednesday will be the 150th day that Belgium has been ungovernable. ... The country is used to this kind of political parenthesis, but never has it known such a long one. All this would remain a local problem (or rather, in respect for their traditions, a Flemish problem and a Walloon problem) if it were not for the central role played by Belgium. If the country where the directives come from can do without a government, why should the others need one ?"
