Europe wants a choice in immigration
Angela Merkel and Nicolas Sarkozy presided over a Franco-German council of ministers dedicated to immigration and integration. For the editorialist Yves Thréard, "Selective immigration, though this not always admitted, is now the privileged option from Paris to London, from Berlin to Madrid. This new attitude is an opportunity to be seized as the mini-treaty is about to be put into practice. Stances on legal or illegal immigration will in the future depend on EU competence and will be able to be adopted by a majority vote, no longer unanimity. This is notable progress, towards a harmonisation, which has not been sufficiently underlined. It remains to be accompanied by greater cooperation with the States, emigration zones. Those of central Europe - Romania and Bulgaria in particular - should eventually benefit from their ties with Brussels."
