Train strikes in Hungary
Railway employees in Hungary went on strike yesterday to protest against the closure of branch lines and cuts in social expenditure. Péter N. Nagy sympathises with their cause: "Governments across Europe believe that leaving the current cost structures intact will destroy the future because it would mean there would be no money left to meet the challenges of this world. But everywhere in Europe people are protesting against this view. The same is happening in Hungary, where people have now taken to the streets to protest against the dismantling of the welfare state - and not the 'lying speech' delivered by Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany over a year ago. At last there are strikes; at last real problems are being addressed on the streets. Since yesterday we know that it is possible to criticise government measures in a politically correct manner. This was an extra-parliamentary lesson in democracy."
